This very old heirloom has become something of a rarity and is quite distinctive with it's shapely outline and bold rusty red colouring. Increases very quickly and has lost none of it's cast iron constitution over the years. Produces many flower stems and buds albeit with little branching as one would expect in a variety of this antiquity.

Early usually starts mid-late June.
Mid Season is late June with main flowering through July.
Late season is late July and into August.
Please note flowering period can be affected by positioning and seasonality factors. By selecting varieties with different flowering periods you will get the longest period of bloom.

Height - This is an approximate height of the flower stems. The foliage is usually lower.

Dormant means the leaves dies down completely in the winter.
Semi Evergreen varieties maintain some foliage over-winter.
Evergreen varieties may maintain all foliage over the winter. The foliage state can be influenced by the severity or otherwise of the winter period.
It is often said that dormant varieties are the absolute hardiest but all offered varieties have been extensively trialled here and all are hardy.
Ploidy - Diploid
Ploidy - In layman's terms ploidy is the number of chromosomes a variety has. Older varieties are nearly all diploids but modern day breeding techniques resulted in improved tetraploid varieties with three chromosomes. It is difficult to distinguish between them in general plant appearance, although diploids do have ever so slightly narrower foliage. As far as the blooms are concerned tetraploids have flowers with thicker, heavier substance and fuller form and are the very pinnacle of perfection and grandeur. Diploids are not so heavily textured and can be more graceful in appearance. They also tend to open earlier in the day even when it is colder. Diploids will usually grow and increase more quickly.

Stafford
Glowing crimson with old fashioned form, showy and effective in the border and as tough and reliable as you would expect having lost none of it's fortitude over the years. Teams unexpectedly well in the border with Echinacea, as well as ochre-gold grasses and ruby Helenium. A classic and well known variety. Minnie Wildfire
The beauty of Minnie Wildfire lies not so much within each individual bloom so much as the inevitable mass display of many, many graceful modestly sized warm nutmeg and brownish bronze flowers which cluster amongst a multitude of slender stems to marvellous effect for many weeks during summer. Can produce over 35 buds per stem when established! Year in year out this is a top performer and a variety which associates so well in the mixed flower border it comes very highly recommended. An unusual one in the Spider class in that it is small flowered. Not to be overlooked. Good increaser.

Sammy Russell
Brick red with sharply defined narrow petals. Looks great in drifts or clumps of 3 or more and a quick grower so you don't have to wait long before you get a really floriferous show. This is a late flowering variety, normally still on the go in September and is set off to perfection with companion plants such as Helenium, golden and bronze grasses, crocosmia or purple leafed Heuchera as shown.
